Symptom Considerations

• Amount of blood lost is the main concern.
• If there is a lot of blood, your cat should be seen by your veterinarian as soon as possible.
• Take a stool sample with you if you can.
• Some questions to prepare for:
  • When did you first notice blood?
  • How much blood is there?
  • Any mucus with stool?
  • Is your cat straining to defecate?
  • Is your cat constipated?
  • Does your cat have diarrhea?
  • Is your cat scooting?
• Your veterinarian may:
  • Examine the rectum, anal glands, and feces
  • Check a stool sample for parasites
• Your cat may require:
  • Sedation for the procedure
  • Anal gland expression or anal gland flushing
  • Oral medications you will administer at home (pain relievers, antibiotics)
