Symptom Considerations
- Amount of blood lost is the main concern.
- If there is a lot of blood, your dog should be seen by your veterinarian as soon as possible.
- Some questions to prepare for:
- When did you first notice blood?
- How much blood is there?
- Any mucus with stool?
- Is your dog straining to defecate?
- Is your dog constipated?
- Does your dog have diarrhea?
- Is your dog scooting?
- Your veterinarian may:
- Examine the rectum, anal glands, and feces
- Check a stool sample for parasites
- Your dog may require:
- Sedation for the procedure
- Anal gland expression or anal gland flushing
- Oral medications you will administer at home (pain relievers, antibiotics)
